Camera and Capture Module 4 – Aperture

For the first Aperture activity, we had to find an uninterrupted subject or scene such as a fence to photograph at different apertures.

We had to set the camera to Aperture priority mode, then shoot a series of the same image, only changing the aperture each time.

Each time I closed down the aperture, the shutter speed decreased to compensate for less light coming in through the aperture. The depth of field also gets deeper with a smaller aperture, so you get more of the picture in focus by choosing a smaller aperture (larger number). Personally, I love working with a wide aperture, especially for portraiture.

The next activity was to take a series of portraits, and have the subject move further away from the camera each time. But this time we were to keep the aperture exactly the same.

Each time my son, Louis, moved further away from my camera, I got a deeper depth of field. Meaning the background behind him became clearer the further away he was from me and closer he was to the background. I really enjoyed this activity. I love playing around with aperture and depth of field to change the outcome of the depth of field in my images.
