During week 2 we learned all about the importance of backing up our work, and the best way to do so is by using a three tiered back up system. A three tier system is where you have your original copy of your photos, files, etc on your computer hard drive, a second copy of these images/files on a raid system or an external hard drive, and then a third copy off-site either at another location or online using a cloud service.
For my three tiered system I have my original files on my computer hard drive, a copy on my external hard drive and another copy on a Cloud program called Backblaze. After researching Cloud programs, I found Backblaze to be the best value for money with unlimited storage space, and was also recommended by some professional photographers in the class resources (and fellow students with IT backgrounds)!
The second part of this activity was to complete a quiz all about backing up and different storage systems out there. I got 87% which I am pretty happy with. At the beginning of the week I had never heard of a ‘RAID’ and was completely confused by the idea! So with that in mind, 87% seems pretty good to me!
This week has taught me a lot about the more technical, IT side of photography. I can see why regular backing up is so important as a professional photographer especially. I know getting into good habits with these things now will only benefit me in the future.
